The general stuff
Which areas of Hampshire do you cover?
We are based in Petersfield and cover roughly a forty-minute radius: Liss, Liphook, Alton, Bordon, Horndean, Clanfield, Waterlooville, Winchester, Alresford, Havant and Emsworth, plus the West Sussex and Surrey borders - Midhurst, Petworth, Haslemere, Farnham and Chichester. See all areas we cover, or call Nick on 07494 496695 and ask.
How much does a painter and decorator cost in Petersfield?
It depends on the size and condition of the job, which is why we always visit before quoting. You get a written, itemised, fixed-price quote - the price you agree is the price you pay. There is no charge and no obligation for the visit or the quote. Request a free quote.
How much does a hand-painted kitchen cost?
Typically a fraction of the cost of a replacement kitchen. The price depends on the number of doors and drawers, the condition of the existing finish and the paint system you choose. Call Nick on 07494 496695 for a free written quote - most kitchen quotes can be turned around within a couple of days of the visit. More on hand-painted kitchens.
Will you make a mess of my house?
No. We use dustless sanding, which extracts dust at source into a sealed vacuum, and we sheet and mask every room properly before any work starts. Most of our work is done in occupied family homes, and we clear up completely at the end of every day.
Are you insured?
Yes. Jackson Painting and Decorating Ltd is fully insured and registered in England, company number 17182846. More about the firm on the about page.
What paints do you use?
The best trade systems for each surface: Farrow & Ball, Little Greene, Benjamin Moore Scuff-X for hard-wearing woodwork, Tikkurila for flawless flat ceilings, Dulux Heritage and Sadolin for exteriors, and Coat for cabinetry. We will recommend the right system for your job in the written quote - and we are always happy to work with colours you have already chosen.
Do I need to move out while you decorate?
No. Almost all of our work is done in occupied homes. We work room by room, keep everything sheeted and masked, and leave the space usable at the end of each day.
How long does a hand-painted kitchen take?
Most kitchens take one to two weeks depending on the number of units and the condition of the existing finish. Proper preparation - cleaning, sanding, priming - is what makes the finish last, so we never rush it. See how we paint a kitchen.
Can you repair rotten window frames, or do I need new windows?
In most cases we can repair them. We cut out the rot, splice in new timber (hardwood where the original softwood has failed) or use specialist resin repair systems, then prime, paint and seal correctly so the weather cannot get back in. It is usually far cheaper than replacement windows. Details on window and timber restoration.
Do you do free quotes?
Yes. We come and look at the job properly - not a guess over the phone - then send a written, itemised quote. If we are not the right people for the job, we will tell you. Start here or call 07494 496695.
How far in advance do I need to book?
It varies with the season - exteriors book up fastest for spring and summer. Get in touch early if you have a date in mind, and we will always try to fit smaller jobs around the bigger ones.
Do you work weekends?
Our normal hours are Monday to Friday, 7.30am to 6pm. Where a deadline matters - a family event, a house going on the market - we have been known to finish projects over a weekend. Ask.
Hand-painted kitchens
Is a hand-painted kitchen better than a spray finish?
They are different finishes for different situations. Hand painting gives a subtle, traditional brushed finish that suits period homes and in-frame kitchens, and it can be done in situ with less masking. Spraying gives a factory-flat finish and suits modern slab doors. We do both - hand painting on site, spraying where the job calls for it.
What paint do you use on kitchen cabinets?
Purpose-made cabinetry systems: Benjamin Moore Scuff-X, Little Greene Intelligent eggshell, Coat, or a sprayed lacquer where the job suits it. These are far more durable than standard wall paints - they resist knocks, grease and repeated cleaning.
How long does a painted kitchen finish last?
With the right preparation and a proper cabinetry paint system, ten years or more of normal family use. Preparation is everything: we clean, degrease, sand, prime and caulk before any topcoat goes on - which is why our finishes last.
Can you paint any kitchen?
Almost. Solid timber, MDF and veneered doors all paint beautifully. High-gloss foil-wrapped doors are the main exception - we will tell you honestly at the quote visit if yours will not give a lasting result.
Interiors
Do you do small jobs - a single room, a hallway?
Yes. Hallways, stairs and landings are some of our favourite transformations, and single rooms are a good way to find out how we work. No job is too small to quote.
What is dustless sanding?
Sanding with machines connected to a sealed extraction vacuum, so dust is captured at source instead of settling through your home. It means we can do serious preparation - full wall sanding, woodwork rub-downs - in an occupied house without the mess.
Can you match a colour or help us choose?
Both. We work with Farrow & Ball, Little Greene, Dulux, Benjamin Moore and others daily, so we can advise what works in your light and on your surfaces - and we are happy to paint sample patches before you commit.
Exteriors
When is the best time of year for exterior painting?
Late spring to early autumn, when surfaces are dry and temperatures are stable. Exterior slots book up fastest, so if you want the outside of your house done next summer, get the quote arranged in winter or early spring.
Do you repair rot before painting?
Always - painting over rot just hides it for a season. We cut out the failed timber, splice in new (hardwood where the original softwood failed), or use resin repair systems from Repair Care, then prime and seal correctly so the repair outlasts the paint.
How often should the outside of a house be repainted?
Every five to eight years for most properties, depending on exposure, the previous preparation and the paint system used. Well-prepared work with a proper exterior system lasts at the top end of that range.
